Different Image Formats – Why So Many?

Posted on 07 January 2009

You will come across many different file formats while browsing the internet. “.gif”, “.png”, and “.jpeg” just to name a few. But why are all of these file types necessary if they all do one thing? Well, I am here to explain a few of the types to you.
.png – These files are a high quality image format. These generally take up more disk space but have a much better look.
.gif – This format is often used to make “moving” images. These are often used when you want to create a file of a small size.
.jpeg – These are probably the most common format. These are in the middle of .gif’s and .png’s in both file size and quality. They can’t be used to make moving images but are the most common image format because they are the easiest to use.
