Who owns the ;-)

Posted on 20 December 2008

Just this week, a Russian entrepreneur made the announcement that he has trade marked the “Wink” emoticon. He also claims he was the first one to use it. But, being the nice guy he is, has said that anyone can use it in text messages, or anywhere else as long as its for non-commercial use.

Any company that uses this ;- ) symbol, will have to pay a yearly fee of 10,000$! I find that pretty ridiculous, seeing how this is one of the most used face emoticons on the net. But be assured, he wont have an easy time keeping this widely used emoticon in his name, for others are already complaining about the situation.
